What is a Medicare Supplement Plan?

Medicare supplement plans (also referred to as Medigap or Medicare supplemental insurance) are private health insurance plans used to supplement Medicare.

Medicare Part A & B deductibles, co-insurance, and co-payments are covered under a Medicare supplemental policy.

A plan provides coverage related to Medicare-covered hospital, skilled nursing facility, ambulance, durable medical equipment, home health care, as well as excess doctor charges. Other policies also cover specific health services that are not covered under Medicare (dental care, eye examinations related to prescribing glasses, long-term care, etc.)

What are my options for opening a policy?

There are 10 standard plan options in most states. Since Plan F is the only policy that includes all Medicare supplemental benefits, it tends to be the most popular option.

Is a Medicare Advantage plan the same as Medicare supplemental insurance?

They are not the same. Medicare Advantage plans provide a way to receive Medicare coverage with some additional benefits while Medicare supplement plans help to cover Medicare Part A & B out-of-pocket expenses (deductibles, co-insurance, copayments, etc.).

In order to decide whether a Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare supplemental insurance is better for you, it is important to compare the costs, benefits, and plan options based on your specific health needs. Medicare Advantage plans require you to pay your Part B monthly premium, in addition to the monthly premium for your plan.

Medicare supplemental insurance plans are generally standardized, and costs can vary depending on the insurer.
